Awesome new little game

Audiosurf It’s called Audiosurf. This has been one of the best used $9 I have ever spent. The game uses your music to create tracks. On these tracks lie a grid that you need to fill with the color blocks. Match the colors of 3 or more to rack up points shown at the top of the screen. At the end of the track the total can be put online in a global rankings system. From there you can compete with others and even friends for the highest score on a music track.

I’ve wasted a better of 5 hours on this game, saying “just one more”. And the best part is that it never seems to get old because every music track is a new game track. And if you have a lot of albums, it goes on forever. It supports every major sound format (No DRM allowed) and it even comes with The Orange Box Soundtrack to start you off. It seems that I’ve been a lot more entertained by cheap $10 games than the traditional $50 game now days.

Christmas in Tyria

Christmas has come and gone but in some MMOs, it lasts for like a week or two. In Guild Wars, its one of those holidays. One of the areas in the game however doesn’t celebrate the in-game holiday called Winter’s Day which is similar to real life. The Factions area called Cantha was inspired by oriental nations. However Tyria has 3 major places to celebrate. One is in the old area of Ascalon, on is in the next kingdom called Kryta and the last is in a newer kingdom named Elona.

Every year, they give out themed hats and various powerups. Which is pretty much in line with other MMOs like City Of Heroes and World Of Warcraft, though the execution is obviously different. In Guild Wars, a godly character gives a speech and then gives you a unique hat depending on where you viewed that character. In WoW, I believe that you have to win one off of a boss in an instance. In City Of Heroes, its won through a mission (I think, its been a while) which unlocks every holiday and gives you a badge to prove that you did it. This particular event has always been pretty enjoyable and has plenty to do. If you haven’t fired up Guild Wars in a while, now is one of those times to do so.

The Orange Box

So I finally got to play and finish all of the orange box and its a must buy for any type of gamer. All games included are very polished and well done.  Portal is my favorite. ITs about some lady who got stuck in a place called Aperture Labs on “Bring Your Daughter to Work” day.

The game actually ties into the main Half Life 2 story. Portal is a puzzle game that uses the portal gun to create wormholes to various places within the various rooms that is designed to test its functions. Things turn for the worst when you find clues about the main computer being off of its rocker. Its a very compelling 3 hours that will keep your interest piqued from start to finish.

Next up is Team Fortress 2 which takes design ques from The Incredibles.  Its a very balanced class based multiplayer shooter and the spiritual successor to the original Team Fortress, however some die hard fans hate it because of its new tightly focused gameplay. The game has enough classes to interest all types of players, even those who are not good shooters at all.

Finally its the very anticipated Half Life 2: Episode 2 which honestly keeps in line with its previous original release and Episode 1. Just like any Valve game, it will keep you interested and on your toes. Especially when you learn about the new Hunter type robot that becomes very annoying towards the end of the game.  The creepy guy in the suit makes his usual cameo spouting the obvious Shakespearean  messages with the usual twist (creepy but entertaining).

If you were fortunate to preorder on the Steam platform, you were given the nice bonus of Peggle Extreme, which is a 10 stage HL2 styled version of the original Peggle.  The reviews about this package is very much true and well worth the money. I would recommend it to anyone who’s looking for a great gaming experience.

Motion Sickness

There is honestly one thing that I despise about gaming.  If anyone didn’t know, the very anticipated Team Fortress 2 beta hit and I can’t enjoy it. Why? Motion Sickness of course. I just don’t know why, I’ve been gaming for years and this is the only genre that manages to bring me to my knees in less than 30 minutes.

I have gotten suggestions about ginger(and peppermint surprisingly) and how it can reduce or remove motion sickness for hours.(almost like those heart burn caplets.) Hopefully I can get a hold of some ginger caplets(or peppermint) so that I can get into this game for longer than 30 minutes.

The Eye of the North and Steam Community

So I finally gotten the GW:EN prerelease bonus pack and am quietly awaiting the release. It cannot get here any sooner, I am dying for another adventure.

Another thing that has popped up today is the release of the Steam Community Beta program.  So if you just so happen to have Steam, load it up and join the beta program through the setting dialog in Steam.

Guild Wars: Nightfall Preview – First Impressions

Despise the lack of coverage from 1up, these are my first impressions of the game so far:

I thoroughly went through a lot of the preview and I am impressed. Anet managed to improve EVERYTHING across the board. There are still tons of bugs but I expect those to be worked out by Halloween. I also like that characters in NF have a lot more personality regardless of how vain some people can be.

Pros:>

-Hero System:

I don’t care where they got it from, all I know is it works very well. It brings in a new dimension to the world of henchmen. IT also won’t affect team making or paring up with a human player since people who have used henchmen exclusively in the past won’t have any need to change their habit, Or become disgusted with the game because they were forced to team up with humans.

-Music / Battle Music:

Jeremy Soule decided to give ANET the good stuff this time around. Maybe they upped his pay. But whatever they did, it allowed him to put personality into the music. There is also the addition of battle music that triggers when you cast a spell in battle. Its very catchy and it CHANGES depending on conditions in battle. That was a nice surprise. Its very blood charging and makes battling much more fun.

-Environment:

It looked good from the screen shots and looks even better in game. Plenty of Egyptian influence on the island. Flora and even the monsters themselves look very original. I did notice a couple of plants from Maguuma Jungle but it was completely dominated by the landscape. The New portal animations are a very nice touch and makes the game look current. The environment is much more immersive than both post sear Tyria AND Cantha.

-Cutscenes:

Cutscenes so far have been pretty good to experience. Its Nothing like the random emotes from Factions And its even better thrown together than in Prophecies. The moving jaws on the characters are a nice touch. The voice acting talent is just as good as ever, but THIS time they decided to DIRECT THEM LIKE THEY WERE SUPPOSED TO. Good to finally see you guys on your job Voice Directors.

Cons:

-Quests:

The quests are just as weird and mundane as ever. Go do this, bring me that, fetch this, protect that, bring this, visit that. I haven’t seen any REAL departure from the norm in the quests yet. Maybe they get better further in the game, but its pretty much the same.

-Outpost Layout:

The outposts so far are very WEIRDLY laid out. ITs very easy for a low level person to wander into an area with groups of very dangerous creatures. This can be easily fixed by rethinking the nature of the the placement of monsters and their power levels or get the player evenly matched for the next area.

-Henchmen AI

I applaud the Hero system but the AIs are another subject. When placing markers for them to perch on, they become very fidgety and bugged. Like they were on some extreme version of speed. Every time you move, they attempt to move with you but the programming keeps them there which makes them display kind of a flicker. They also know no fear so they will not easily retreat from a battle if you leave the area. IT can probably be fixed, but right now its garbage.

Mixed Reactions:

-Professions:

I have a mixed reaction about the new professions. Its most likely because I have yet to see what they are really capable of. I do tend to favor the Paragon since their abilities can greatly affect the performance of your team. Dervishes on the other hand are a complete mystery to me at the moment so they will most likely take more time getting used to. Its the same like Mesmers were to me back in the gap. But I love Mesmers now, so I bet all it takes is time.

-Title Grinding:

This is also another area of murky water. The title grinding is a bit confusing to me. Maybe this is supposed to bring a sense of accomplishment to new players. I mostly see title earning an optional thing to do. Or something you do after you beat the game. Not something that actively affects progression into the storyline. IF this is necessary or needed for the story, it needs to be balanced with varied storyline events and feel like fun, not kill a species until its extinct.

Final Thoughts:

I have much praise about Nightfall so far. I had quite a few doubts and worries about Factions which actually materialized. But, I have hardly ANY doubts about Nightfall. Guild Wars really feels NEW to me again with NF. Its a bigger experience than Factions. Its like a more stylized and interesting Prophecies. It doesn’t feel like they are trying to rush you through the game. The new graphics are much smoother and modern.

IF you didn’t buy Factions then you MUST buy Nightfall. :D

Nightfall is upon us…

For a while now, there has been news trickling down about the next Guild Wars installment. However 1up has reluctantly failed to cover details like the worshiped World Of Warcraft. But anyway, the details behind Chapter 3 are interesting. “An outcast god threatens to spread his evil across the known land.” ITs up to the ascended to put the cap back on the darkness before it rips the known world a new one.

There were a number of screens, info and videos that came from the LGC in Germany. Including new graphics information like the new login screen, new screen effects, better water effects and HDR lighting. In addition to new graphic abilities, there are interface enhancements and the new Heroes System.

Nightfall is also proclaimed by ArenaNet to be more PvE focused gameplay. Several videos online shows off the first dungeon where solving puzzles advances you to the new area. The Heroes System is equally interesting. The system basically is an advanced Henchmen system where you can train and customize your Heroes and take them wherever you go. Heroes can also follow advanced AI commands that you give it, making this a very potentially powerful tool for those who have trouble finding groups for Missions and Quests. Also, there will be arenas where you will be able to pit your Heroes against others Heroes in various battles.

Nightfall also includes two new Professions called the Dervish and Paragon. Both of which are very powerful classes that will make playing the new areas more unpredictable. Nightfall is also rumored to be the last story in the Prophecies story arc. Which means virtually anything is possible in Chapter 4 and a totally new aspect of the world can be transitioned in.

Canthan Sewer System

…It’s not the prettiest thing in the game, but its amazing. Many pipes, with dragon head spouts. It must have took them a long time to build it all…
