The Light Tower in Jade

…One of the best landmarks ever in Cantha, this was once a guide to many ships that came through, now stuck in the sea of jade…

Maatu’s Doorstep

…This was a sight to behold, deep within mainland Cantha. Many creatures roam that area too…

Guild Wars: Factions – The World Of Cantha

The world is in peril once again…

Isn’t it always? Just when you’ve gone and save the world from blood thirsty monsters and zealous religious bigots, here comes another threat. This time the world is held by the throat as the new villian, Shiro Tagashi rises from the underworld as an Envoy to regain his mortality. Its up to the deciple of one legendary Master Togo to bring the help of the Tyrians and squash the threat. Little did they know that his power was too great as he turned the sea to Jade and the forests to a petrified wasteland not only 200 years prior to his return.

I won’t tell the entire story as that would ruin the fun of it all. I will admit that this story doesn’t feel as epic as the first game but its just as interesting. Though the game is focused on the ancient battle of the Luxons and Kurzicks. Hence the name “Factions”. This battle also plays a key part of the end game content.Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

Essentially the system floats around creating Alliances with other Guilds. These guilds would help the side of their choice to take over the continent. As the landscape of the scrimmage line moves, so does the advantages of the losing side. The losing side gains more and more of an advantage every time it loses which could turn the tide of the battles in favor of the loser.

The art team goes all out!

The graphics in the game this time around shifts away from the desolate openness of its predecessor in favor of a more lifelike experience. The Asian inspired landscapes and architecture really makes the game come to life.Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.usNow mind you that the game is no graphics juggernaut like Oblivion, but the game’s graphics engine pulls off some amazing lighting and effects like no one’s business.

In the city area, things really blossom with buildings and roads that twist and turn. Multiple levels overlap and plenty of Canthan residents walking up and down the walkways. A clear separation of poor and wealthy residents stand out as moving into these areas, the archetecture changes from raggedy old shack to full scale asian high rises.

All too familiar Gameplay

Now fans of the game may flame me for saying this but the gameplay from the previous game largely remains the same. The fighting system is a little more tweaked thanks to some updates that came forward days before release. But it leaves a little more to be desired. Some spell graphics are amazing and some are a complete let down for something that was named so well.

Great for First timers

The game is GREAT for first timers since this game actually gives you a nice balance of quick gameplay and nice visuals to absorb. The quests and Alliance system combined with the traditional PvP flair will keep you well occupied until the next installment this Christmas.

Though for those of us who experienced the first installment, Factions becomes almost like a stop gap until the developers decide to put out a worthwhile sequel that matches the caliber of the original.

Guild Wars: Factions – The way to Cantha!

I took these pics of both the Ritualist and Assassin From the first Preview Event which was geared for PvP. There are a couple of other events slated to hit so If you missed the first one, there will be others. A PvE or RPG type event is scheduled to be the next type of event to roll out. The other is most likely to be the Launch event of the game.

Ritualists:Image Hosted by ImageShack.us This profession looks like a spin on Gypsie-type character. This character reflects the looks of other type of Shaman or Spirit summoners from many cultures like Native American or African healers. The Animation presented so far reflects a “VooDoo” like dance or stance to summon the spirits that are seemed to be bonded to the mortal world by Chains. These spirits actually struggle to escape since the summoner can also cause their demise. That’s right, there are skills that will sacrifice the spirit for the sake of your party’s well being offering some pretty neat health bonuses for doing so.

Assassin: Image Hosted by ImageShack.usThis is one of the more interesting of the two because it introduces some very unique spells and skills to an already diverse game. Some of these skills actually require you to chain them in a specific order to do the maximum amount of damage to a foe. There are also speed enhancements and teleportation spells to get you out of tight spots very quickly. Assassins are allowed the default of an attribute called “Double Strike”. Double Strike guarentees you a chance of striking the enemy twice a swing. The higher the attribute the better the chance. The animation combined with the looks makes the Assassin seem like Anet’s inspiration was the one and only Naruto manga/anime series.

The recent PvP Preview event was only a small peak inside the game known as “Factions”, AND I expect to see much more at the second event.

The path often took…

…An Image of a pathway during the opening of the game. It was so compelling that I just had to take a pic of it…

Crystal Afternoon

…Well, I’ve been gone a while but life often gets in the way. ANYWAY, This pic was taken on-top of Augury Rock. A VERY nice view of an ancient city in the background and dunes of pure sand…

Reflect Yourself

…I thought that this was a peaceful pic, taken in another one of Kryta’s missions. The very last one I think named Sanctum Cay…

Krytan Sunsets

…Kryta has a number of sunset views but this was the one that I took a shot of. This one is in a mission after the Dark River quest…
